Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist

A fresh twist on Dickens- Oliver’s story seen through the eyes of Fagin as he stands on the gallow

Directors: Paul Stebbings and Phil Smith

Cast: Jilly O’Dowd (Nancy), Eric Tessier Lavigne (Fagin), Dotty Kultys (Artful Dodger) and Alan Mirren (Lord Brownlow).

"PleaseSir, I Want Some More"
The plot line is simplified but it works effectively and exposes the original social commentary on Victorian England and the class system. The script  includes the original dry wit and occasionally critical observations which Dickens is renowned for. Fagin is turned into the primary narrator and having him, on the eve of his execution, speak in retrospect toMr Brownlow as to who was to blame for the hardship and tragedy in the plot. Who is to pay the ultimate price? Is it Fagin, who is in a sense a victim and manipulator of the circumstances which befall him, or is it Mr Brownlow, whose social prejudice and moral goodness set the wheels in motion?
